Cigar conditioning is paramount for getting the most flavor from our cigars. Even just a few percent difference in humidity can drastically influence how a cigar will burn and taste. In order to truly know exactly how much moisture is hitting our cigars, we need to periodically calibrate our hygrometers. In the past, I have used the Boveda Calibration Kit, but found it wanting. The plastic bag they provide seems too small to allow for a reliable reading. So taking that concept one step further, I took two Boveda Humidipak bags and put them in a larger container…a Tupperware. This seemed to do the trick. This has proven to be a tried and true hygrometer calibration method. Now I know exactly what RH my cigars are living in. I recommend calibration every six months. Hygrometers tend to drift over time. Gotta keep our babies happy!
I agree whole heartily that humidity control is imperative to cigar and smoking quality. I use large humidors that I monitor with several hydrometer’s positioned at the bottom and top of my units. I also rotate my cigars every 2 months or so. And though expensive I use as many as 6 to 8 boveda packs in every unit. I place one in every corner and top of my units. I’m always commended by my friends as to how well my cigars burn and taste. I’m a firm believer in letting my cigars rest for 2 months and better before I smoke them. I try to keep them @ 67 and 69 % humidity and get great results all the time. I have had cigars that I thought were good turn spectacular over the course of time!
Good job maintaining your cigars Marco! It’s not easy but it’s worth the effort.
