Cuban Torcedor Turned Artist

Cigar bands are fundamental to Consalvos’ art

Cigars in themselves are works of art.  Handmade by artisans, even non-smokers can appreciate the physical beauty of a fine cigar.  Additionally the beauty of a cigar is usually enhanced by artistic packaging that completes its beautiful presentation.  So beautiful are cigar bands and labels that they have, throughout the twentieth century, become useful elements of artistic projects that move them beyond the function of simply ornamenting cigars.

Throughout the twentieth century, collage artists have incorporated cigar bands and labels into their projects.  One such artist was Felipe Jesus Consalvos .  A Cuban immigrant who ultimatly settled in Philadelphia, Consalvos was a torcedor (cigar roller) prior to becoming an artist. One can certainly understand his affinity for cigars as art.

A wonderful exhibit of his work is now on display at the Andrew Edlin Gallery in New York City and Consalvos’ use of cigar bands is fundamental to his compositions.  If you find yourself in New York, I strongly recommend viewing his wonderful collages.  The exhibit runs from December 16, 2010 to January 29, 2011.

Very cool. With all the variety of labels and packaging these days much more of this style of art could be done. Been looking for good art with a cigar theme but haven’t had much luck. Actually it is out the frustration of looking for good art that that I decided to create the art I wanted to see. My website ” http://www.artcigar.com ” is new and there is only a few pieces on it but that will change in the months to come.
